Technology Center
Kiamichi Area Vo-Tech School district #7 was formed by a vote of the people of Southeast Oklahoma in 1968. The doors to the McAlester Campus and two other campuses (Poteau & Hugo) opened in 1970. The name of the school was changed to Kiamichi Technology Center I 1997 and it now serves 17 public full-time schools (three of which are alternative) and provides 23 programs to the community. A 16,000 square foot Human Resources Technology Center was added in 2000, and a new maintenance building was added in 2001 making the campus over 100,000 square feet.
The school motto, Careers in Progress,
stresses the importance of the school's mission to provide workforce training and services throughout Southeastern Oklahoma. The primary growth of the Campus over the past ten years has been in the area of Business and Industry Services. Coordinators serve industries and businesses from the small or family business to the industries employing hundreds of people. Adult programs are also offered on a flexible schedule that includes day and evening classes. Adult and high school students are served in the regular daytime program.
Higher Education
In 1998, Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, opened a state-of-the-art branch facility in McAlester, offering programs at the associate, bachelor, and graduate levels. The 22,000 square foot building offers interactive classrooms, as well as computer and science laboratories equipped with advanced technologies.
Accreditation & Memberships - Eastern Oklahoma State College, a public community college, is officially accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (since March 1954), the State Regents for Higher Education, the National League for Nursing, the Society of American Foresters, and Oklahoma State School Accrediting Agencies. Eastern's memberships include the American Association of Junior Colleges, the Council of North Central Junior Colleges, and the Oklahoma Association of Junior Colleges.
