Lakes and Streams

Water enthusiasts can find an abundance of exciting destinations within and surrounding the McAlester region, such as Lake McAlester, Sardis Lake, the Illionois River, and the state's largest water reservoir, Eufaula Lake. 

Water features are sources of fun for many residents. Some of the most popular activities include fishing, boating, rafting, kayaking, swimming, sunbathing, and waterskiing.

Oklahoma State Parks

McAlester is centered in the natural beauty of southeast Oklahoma. Some local State Parks include the relaxing Arrowhead State Park and Golf Course, the famous Robber's Cave, and the breathtaking Talimena Drive.

Each Oklahoma State Park will include its own unique combination of hiking, sightseeing, rock climbing, biking, picnicing, golfing, camping, horseback riding, or other activities.

Historic Sites 

McAlester's vibrant history manifests itself in the historic Old Town and Downtown districts. Notable historic structures in the community include the McAlester Scottish Rite Temple, the Alridge Hotel, and the OKLA Theatre.

History buffs and novices alike can appreciate the range of experiences available. From our private and public museums to our unique antique stores, McAlester is full of culture.

McAlester Public Parks & Pools

The City of McAlester operates several recreational facilities, including a softball complex, archery range, skate park, disc golf course, dog park, and arboretum.

The numerous parks throughout the City contain amenities such as tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, swimming pools, splash pads, playground equipment, pavilions with grills, and jogging tracks.

Outdoor Sports

Sports fans can enjoy a variety of athletic pastimes in the community. From the various McAlester Buffaloes' sports teams to regional softball tournaments to the Boys and Girls Club teams, there is always local excitement.

Hosted in McAlester, the annual Jr. Sunbelt Classic is a youth baseball tournament that attracts skilled players from across the nation.

Southeast Exposition Center 

The Southeast Oklahoma Expo Center is a multi-purpose entertainment facility with a sports arena, a certified commercial kitchen, an RV park, an outdoor stage, and numerous conference and special event rooms.

Popular annual events include the Italian Festival, Public Bull Riding, the Junk Hippy Road Show, Fire Fighters Classic and the Okie Nation Hunting & Fishing Show.
